Youth Production

We will be holding auditions for principal roles in May.  Dates will be published soon.   This will give everyone plenty of time to learn their parts before rehearsals start in August.  If you do not want a principal role and want to join the chorus, you do not need to audition but please complete and return the application form.   If you have been in a previous Youth Production and prefer not to attend the audition just let us know on your application form the shows you were in and any roles you performed.

What if you can't make the auditions and would like to be considered for a principal part?

Don't worry!  Complete the application form above and send a DVD or YouTube link of your audition pieces to

We are delighted that Sarah Helsby-Hughes will direct this year's Youth Production.

Rehearsals will be in Harrogate every day from Saturday, August 5th through to the performance.  The performance will be accompanied by an orchestra of young musicians from local music colleges and universities.  Awards will be given for performers in the following categories: best Male voice, best Female voice, best Character Actor and best Character Actress.

The Youth Production is sponsored by the Festival as part of its active programme of youth initiatives and provides an amazing opportunity for young people to learn about theatre, opera, singing and acting, and of course to be part of this amazing Festival.  There is no charge for participants but we do ask that all principals and chorus know the words of their parts before arriving at the first rehearsal due to the short time we have available. We do expect all cast members to provide their own libretto. We would suggest the Chappell’s edition (available on Amazon)

On receipt of your application form we will forward a DVD of HMS Pinafore to you to give you an idea of the show and the story. We will also forward rehearsal CDs to everyone as soon as the show has been cast. These are very kindly supplied to the Youth Production by Mr David Cookson of Musical Solutions.  The Festival Youth Production is always a highlight of the Festival and many of our young people have gone on to have outstanding careers in the world of theatre and music. Gilbert & Sullivan is the ideal introduction to opera and musical theatre. Long-lasting friendships have been formed over the years and we regularly have cast members from overseas including Europe, Scandinavia and the USA.

We are also looking for individuals from the Youth Production to perform in our lunchtime recital programme in the Festival’s Utopia Pavilion located to the left-hand side of the Royal Hall. This is an excellent learning experience for young people to present a 30-minute programme in public or maybe two friends would like to take 15minutes each.   If you would like to participate in this programme please email:
