2019 has seen the 50th Anniversary of Hull University Gilbert and Sullivan Society, and with that our first Production of ‘The Yeomen of the Guard’ since 1975. HUGSS have made several appearances at UNIFEST over the years with performances of Iolanthe, The Mikado and Princess Ida, among many others. With then chance to meet up with our friends over the summer and prepare a show UNIFEST has become a regular part of our yearly calendar and we are excited to come back and perform again this year.
Yeomen has been a real joy to work on for everyone involved. Everything about it, from the grandness of the music to the elaborateness of the plot, is bigger and bolder than any other of Gilbert and Sullivan’s operettas. This show leaves so much scope to delve deep between the lines of Gilbert’s writing and we’ve especially enjoyed exploring the relationship between the characters and the journeys they each take as individuals as the events at the tower unravel. With a lot of the cast having little experience of G&S before this show, we are extremely proud of how far the society has come this year. Pure grit and determination, and a real love for what we do, has gone into ‘Yeomen’ and we know that everyone involved will be loving every second they spend telling you the story of the tower. The only question is: will it all end with a happily ever after?
Hull University will present the Yeomen of the Guard on Thursday 8th August at 14:30 in the Utopia Theatre
